Snake Precautions

As we approach summer, and the hot weather comes out of hibernation, unfortunately so do snakes. Workers in industries such as; agriculture, forestry and construction can considered most vulnerable to these risks. 

A 59yr old woman working in the Hunter Valley Gardens was involved in a fatal snake bite incident which lead to death after being bitten by a brown snake on the 2nd of November. It was assumed that a stroke was the cause of death, however puncture wounds were later found on her ankle by the hospital staff. Venom can cause haemorrhaging, nausea, dizziness and potential collapse within minutes, however most people do not notice the bite as there is no overt pain or swelling. 

Workplaces must ensure they are taking the appropriate steps to protect their employees from exposure to snake related risks. Employers can do this by providing outdoor workers with the appropriate protective equipment such as thick gloves and puncture-proof gaiters. As well as ensure all stage members are first-aid trained and have an emergency plan in place.
