Lack of risk Management Results in Company Paying $165,000 in Fines
An employee with 17 years of industry experience has died in intensive care after installing carpet in a building with a potent, solvent-based adhesive. As a result, WorkSafe opened an investigation on the flooring company where the employee worked. They found that the adhesive used by the worker was known to be a health hazard, but that the company had failed to carry out a risk assessment on its use. There were no safety precautions in place for working with the adhesive, particularly in relation to ventilation and the use of fans, nor were there any detailed information, training or instruction for using the product. WorkSafe clarified that having 17 years of industry experience does not substitute the need for correct risk identification and management system.
The company has been fined $60,000 and must also pay $105,000 for the victims’ family reparations.
