SafeWork NSW has recently fined the director of a cleaning chemical manufacturer, $40,000 for the permanent chemical scarring of an employee.

The company, B&J Industries did not meet workplace health and safety standards as the injured employee was never provided with personal protective equipment. This resulted in highly corrosive acid splashing onto the employee’s skin. SafeWork NSW noted that the employee had been working at the company for two days after migrating to Australia on a temporary work visa. The employee did not speak english as a first language. It later surfaced that their Work Health and Safety  policies and procedures were not accessible or clear to the employee.

It is crucial that employers assess their workplace to ensure any vulnerable workers such as migrants with restricted English skills, new workers or young workers such as apprentices. Safe Industries Australia can assist your business in crafting correct policies, procedures and trainings in a simplified way, easy for you and your staff to understand.
